      MINUTES OF MEETING

There was a meeting of the Emergency Management Committee on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at the Newington Police Department.

PRESENT: Co-Directors Chief Jon D. Tretter and Chief Roy Greenleaf, Selectman Jack O'Reilly, Code Enforcement Officer Charlie Smart, and Administrative Assistant Diana St. Laurent.

      I

      OLD BUSINESS

Chief Tretter phoned Cindy Richards, State OEM Representative, to ask if she has been able to determine the status of the check from the grant for the Newington school generator. The Chief told the Committee that the checks are being held up due to the number of grant requests that are pending. Ms. Richards told the Chief that the check will be presented to the Governor's Council sometime in April 2010. Selectman O'Reilly said he will contact the school and get their portion of the grant money.

There was a brief discussion about the rain and wind storm damage in town this past week. The emergency shelter was open for residents who needed to come there due to loss of power, etc. Chief Tretter told the committee that he has been in touch with Doug Hewitt, with the Seacoast Red Cross, and that he (the Chief) is putting together a book

with all the information needed for the OEM shelter, such as, food supplies, keys, sign-in sheets, etc. Selectman O'Reilly asked if the State provided signs for the emergency shelter and Chief Tretter said no, that the OEM bought the signs locally.

      II

      NEW BUSINESS

A Chief Tretter said that he did an inventory of all the barricades and the police department barricades are stored in the garage. Charlie Smart recommended that they purchase new barricades because the wooden ones are obsolete and the new ones are now made out of plastic. There was discussion about purchasing barrels to use during emergencies and/or road closings and where the funds would come from. Chief Tretter said that he will look into the cost of the new barricades and barrels.

      B. Chief Tretter said that he wanted this meeting to address the issue of getting the emergency shelter ready. Selectman O'Reilly asked if there were any suggestions on how to get volunteers to man the shelter, other than Bea Marconi. Chief Greenleaf suggested that they have a "sign-up" list to see if any residents will volunteer. Charlie Smart suggested that either police or fire personnel could be the ones who open up the emergency shelter, but Chief Greenleaf said that during emergency situations, his personnel are already out dealing with the emergencies in town. Chief Tretter suggested that Bea Marconi could still get the lights on and open the shelter, but he said he did not want to put the burden on her all the time. Chief Tretter suggested that he and Chief Greenleaf could also get the shelter ready to be used. Selectman O'Reilly said that he will put a notice for volunteers in the next newsletter and Chief Tretter said that he would have a notice posted on the website.

The meeting adjourned at 1:40 p.m.
