Hurricane Facts

What is a hurricane?
In short, a hurricane is an intense tropical storm with powerful winds and heavy rain.
A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone, which is a generic term for a low pressure system that generally forms in the tropics. The cyclone is accompanied by thunderstorms and, in the Northern Hemisphere, a counterclockwise circulation of winds near the earth’s surface.

A storm becomes classified as a hurricane if it sustains winds of at least 74 mph!

Hurricane Names
These storms are given names when they reach 39 mph by the World Meteorological Organization. The names are picked from a list of names that are approved before the start of each hurricane season.
