The Town of Newington serves a population of 800 residents, along with an Industrial, commercial and military populace. The workforce and customers coming to Newington on a daily basis can exceed 35,000. Newington is located between the City of Portsmouth to our south and the City of Dover to our north. Shore side to Great and Little Bays and the Piscataqua River. The department is comprised of 10 FT Officers, 3 PT Officers, and an Administrative Assistant.
A three-member Police Commission oversees the Police Department, created in 1987 by the vote of the Town Meeting. Due in large part to their hard work and dedication, the department has a very low rate of turnover among the full time officers. The department relies very heavily upon part time officers to fill vacant shifts. Part time officers fill five shifts each week, plus the various openings resulting from sickness, vacation or training needs. Their daily contribution cannot be calculated, often leaving a full time job and reporting for an additional eight hours of patrol work.
The quality of part time officers, many of whom work full time at other police departments throughout the state, remains among the highest in the state, and someone obtaining a full time law enforcement position in another agency usually causes our part time turnover.
You may rest assured that you are served by a group of well-trained officers. And a most capable Administrative Assistant, Diana St. Laurent, who has been with the department since 1979, manages them.
