The Newington Police Department was initially housed in the Old Town Hall and police information and reports were filed in card board boxes, if any were available.  With the construction of the New Town Hall, the police department moved in at the same location as the Newington Fire Department.  This is what the offices looked like back then. From 1979 until 1989, this was home for Newington's finest - the Chief of Police, 9 full-time police officers and an Executive Secretary.

After several years of preparation and review, the town voted to construct a police department which would meet safety standards. The site behind the new Town Hall was chosen and construction began in the fall of 1988 with anticipated completion of the project in spring of 1989.

On June 26, 1989, the Newington Selectmen, Jack Mazeau and Peggy Lamson sliced through the  ribbon and the Police Department members officially took residence in their new $600,000 building.  "Like Newington, it's not extravagant, but it's got a quiet class and we want to keep it that way," said Joe Akerley, Newington Police Commissioner, during the brief ceremony outside the building.
